Goodhart Farms Preserve Update

The sales have now been completed and a series of transactions with the
family have resulted in improved trail access on the preserve as well as adjacent private land protected with a conservation easement. All told, the nature preserve portion of the property now stands at 595 acres with an additional 103 acres protected with a conservation easement.

“With nearly 700 adjacent acres now protected (both nature preserve and private), these latest additions have been a continuation of the remarkable gifts the Mayne, Neff, and Matthews families have contributed to this community,” remarked Tom Bailey, the Conservancy’s executive director. “This nature preserve, located only 15 minutes north of Harbor Springs, is undoubtedly one of the premier outdoor ‘quiet recreation’ spots within our service area.”

Future plans for the preserve are currently in process with one trail system on the eastern side already complete. Established parking areas are planned for next summer, as well as the completion of additional trails. Allowed uses on the preserve will vary by section and will include hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and cross country skiing.
“We are further indebted to the Mayne, Neff, and Matthews families and Brian Schman who have contributed countless hours toward trail clearing and development,” said stewardship specialist Cindy Mom. “Their commitment to the care and enjoyment of this land has been a tremendous assistance to us and allowed things to move ahead at a rate much faster than we could have done on our own.”

Currently, access to the eastern portion of the trails is available from Hannah Road, a seasonally maintained road. Click here for a preserve description, directions, and map.
