Kids Winter Celebration Day at Round Lake
Saturday, February 4th, 2012 10 am to noon

The Little Traverse Conservancy is teaming up with the Little Traverse Bay Bands (LTBB) of Odawa Indians and Maureen Stine of Natureology to provide a day full of winter fun “up-north” style! Observe tracks in the snow, learn about lakes in the winter, get a lesson in ice fishing and - if the snow is deep - we may even do a little snowshoeing! Come ready for the elements as we hike through the trails of Round Lake Nature Preserve and make our way out to the frozen Round Lake. Maureen will share ice fishing basics where participants will learn strategies in safety, rigging a jig pole and tip-up, and positive messages on fishing ethics. Kira Davis of LTBB will provide a hands-on field presentation about the importance of water to the Odawa Tribe and how they monitor lakes in the winter. Participate in the data process and how to use a Sonde to learn what all the data means to keep our water clean! Dress warmly as we will be outdoors and on the windy lake for the duration of this event (layers of windproof clothing, hats, gloves and warm socks and waterproof boots are highly recommended).

NOTES: All participants over age 17 intending to fish must purchase a fishing license (sold at many sporting goods/retail stores) prior to attending the program. A limited supply of ice fishing poles will be provided, although participants are encouraged to bring their own. Snowshoes will be needed and the Conservancy has a limited supply. Please indicate if you would like to reserve any for your party. Registration is free, but space is limited, so please call ahead.
